Livestock Guardian Dogs

Dogs are a critical piece in raising sheep and other livestock in Kansas, offering protection from intense coyote pressure. We added two female Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mixes (Muffin and Meadow) to the farm in 2019 to lend a hand to Rupert, our male Great Pyrenees, in fending off the coyotes. Muffin had a little of six pups in November 2019, and Meadow had a litter of ten pups in January 2020. Born and raised with the sheep, these pups were able to live the life they are bred for from the get-go and it was so much fun to watch them grow and hone the instincts they were the born with. They are intelligent, adorable and enormous, and a ton of cuddly, fuzzy fun. We were able to keep five of the pups (Loaf, Biscuit, Sparky, Lark and Shady) to help guard of flocks of sheep, along with their parents. Our son, Scott, snagged two of the pups (Ise and Stella) to guard his growing flock of sheep, and our daughter, Genevieve, took two of the pups (Missy and Bronco) to be the world's best companions to her and her boyfriend, Jake. Two of the pups went to a wonderful home on a Flint Hills cattle ranch, one went to a firefighter and his growing family near Eudora, two went to New Hampshire to a farm run by a retired veterinarian and her husband, one went to farmer friends near Perry, Kansas, and one went to a loving home near Emporia.
